Master Copies

Michelangelo

Michelangelo is the Master of Masters, and the Sistine Chapel ceiling is beyond a masterpiece. In particular, the prophet Jeremiah is exceptionally moving. I cried often when copying this fresco because of the depth of feeling and humanity expressed. The pose of the hand on the face is symbolic and represents deep understanding and foresight that is prophetic.

18 x 24 Watercolour on wood, sealed and varnished.

Fabritius

Carel Fabritius, a Dutch painter and one of Rembrandt’s most promising students. Fabritius developed his own artistic style and as you can see from my master copy of “The Goldfinch”, he experimented with light and shadow to great effect. Fabritius leaves only 13 works as his life was cut short when he died in an explosion in a Delft factory at the age of 32.

Carlos de Haes

Carlos de Haes is a Spanish landscape master. This work is in the Prado museum and a wing devoted to this master is in the works. The light and atmosphere and sense of space is striking.

Vermeer

Vermeer’s work is revered worldwide and few painters have brought painting to this level of mastery. In 2023, his works were gathered together in a once in a lifetime exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. While copying this piece I was constantly amazed. My copy does not capture the detail of the original but is a good study of the stillness and light of a captured moment.
